Halloween Decorations from your Garden
Technorati Tags: Halloween decorations
As a rite of passage to announce the arrival of fall and cold weather, many gardeners will begin their long list of fall landscaping projects that include putting away all of the garden tools, cleaning up the vegetable garden and mulching the flower beds. Included in this many homeowners will head to their local supermarket to purchase Halloween decorations
Instead of heading to a store to purchase items for Halloween décor, gardeners may want to consider creating their own Halloween decorations from supplies they can find in their vegetable garden, flower garden or even right on the lawn.Of course some of the most obvious Halloween decorations that can be grown in the garden are vegetable plants like pumpkins, gourds, and squash. Every good indoor and outdoor Halloween display should included carved pumpkins surrounded by gourds and squash. These garden plants can be incorporated into any vegetable garden during the mid-summer months and will arrive just in time for the Halloween display. Pumpkins and gourds are great on a front porch but are also great for a coffee table centerpiece or even a bathroom display. Another great way to add to your Halloween display is by collecting fall leaves. These will need to be raked up from the yard anyhow, but instead of throwing them all into a yard bag and putting them on the curb for trash pick-up, why not use them in your Halloween display? Of course, you may want to consider combining a pumpkin and leaves to create a scary scarecrow on the lawn. If you are adding other features like mummies or headless men, stuffing old clothes with leaves is a great way to make them seem more life like.
Remember that once leaves fall on the ground they will only remain without decomposing for a short time. If you are planning on using them inside the home, you can stop the decomposing process by pressing leaves in wax paper for your display. After pressing the leaves, you can cut around the edge of the leaf and they will maintain their gorgeous color forever.
No Halloween display would be complete without using hay or straw to decorate. Of course, unless you are a farmer who uses hay for feeding animals, you might not have a stack of hay readily available. Many farmers are willing to sell stacks of hay around the Halloween season, but if you have a large yard and patches of tall grass, you can create your own straw. Once you have mowed down the grass, let it sit to dry out for a few days. From here, it can be used to stuff scarecrows, mummies, ghosts and other ghoulish figures.
Another great natural Halloween decoration from your garden is corn stalks. By the end of September or early November corn stalks will be brown and dry, whether they are left standing in the garden or have been cut and stored in a dry location. Corn stalks are great for tying to lampposts or to the house as a back drop for a [halloween display]with Jack-O-Lanterns and Scarecrows. Use your imagination when looking around your garden and lawn for Halloween decorations that come straight from nature. Using tools from your garden will allow you to keep the spirit of your garden alive for a few more weeks before it turns cold.
