Thanksgiving Lawn and Garden Decorations

By the time the Thanksgiving holiday has arrived most gardeners have hung up their tools, cut back perennials, removed annuals and already planted new bulbs for the following spring. This does not mean your lawn and garden has to be dull and drab for the Thanksgiving holiday, though. There are lots of festive ways to spruce up your landscape with Thanksgiving lawn and garden decorations.

The beauty of Thanksgiving decorations is that they encompass the feel of the entire fall season, so can be put out as early as October, when most flowers and flowering plants begin to lose their beauty. Many Thanksgiving lawn and garden decorations can also be incorporated with Halloween decorations, although the scary Halloween decorations will have to be removed after the trick-or-treat night is over.

Reuse decorations for the Holidays

Many lawn and garden decorations that can double as both Halloween and [Thanksgiving decorations] include pumpkins, gourds, stacks of hay, cornstalks and leaves. Of course one of the main problems with sharing natural decorations between Halloween and Thanksgiving is getting them to not begin decomposing before the Thanksgiving holiday. With this in mind, if you plan on sharing lawn and garden decorations for the two holidays, you may want to wait until the last minute to decorate for Halloween.

Another great element to add to your Thanksgiving lawn and garden is fruit, possibly in a cornucopia display. Although many Thanksgiving lawn displays focus on the vegetable aspects of the harvest season, usually with pumpkins, gourds and cornstalks, fruit was also an important part of the original Thanksgiving harvest. Keep in mind that fruit decomposes fairly quickly, although it may hold for longer in November if you are living in a cold climate zone. Instead of using real fruit, you may want to consider heading to a craft store and looking for fake fruit.

Visit a nearby craft store

While you are at the craft store, you can pick up items to make a wreath or a series of wreaths for the front door, for above the garage door or even for the back deck. Working on a wreath is an excellent way to get the kids excited about the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday. Items you may want to consider placing on a fall Thanksgiving wreath include fake cranberries, fall colored ribbon, fake fall leaves, small fake pumpkins, pinecones, flowers and even Indian corn. Although you can use real fruits and vegetables to make a wreath, using fake items will allow you to reuse the wreath in your Thanksgiving lawn and garden decorations for years to come.

A very simple way to add to the spirit of your Thanksgiving lawn and garden decorations is through a flag stake or stand. These can go anywhere in the yard, but are most often displayed by the mailbox or by the front steps or entryway. A Thanksgiving flag and a basic iron stand can be purchased at most craft stores or supermarkets. The best part about purchasing a flag stand is that it doesn’t just work as a Thanksgiving lawn decoration
