Christmas Lawn Decorations
One of the best parts about the [Christmas holiday] is driving through a neighborhood and enjoying the beautiful Christmas lawn decorations that have been placed on display in front yards. Many gardeners will turn their attention to making their landscape a winter wonderland when they can’t actually garden during the winter months.
Some homeowners have a knack for making their landscape look beautiful, while others just seem to clutter their lawn with a little of everything. There are endless Christmas lawn decorations available and because of this it sometimes seems impossible to know exactly where to begin with decorating a lawn for Christmas. Here are a few tips to make your Christmas lawn decorating a little easier.
Stick to a Theme
Whether it be snowmen, angels, a display of baby Jesus or reindeers, it is important to first pick a theme and stick to it for the entire Christmas lawn display. It is important to resist the temptation to choose everything in the store that you see and like. This will help keep your lawn from looking like a garage sale of different Christmas decorations. Even if you like the idea of a snowman and angels, see if you can find a way to incorporate the two together into one theme, or consider using snowmen one year and angels the next. Remember that you will have plenty of Christmases to come and changing things up every few years will add to the beauty of your outdoor Christmas display.
Stick to Similar Lighting
How many times have you driven past a home where there are blue lights on one side of the house, white lights on the other and twinkling colored lights in the middle? This takes away from the beauty of your Christmas lawn decorations. Spend a little money investing in your outdoor Christmas lights and take care of them at the end of the season so that you can use them for years to come. A good way to keep them from getting tangled is to find a piece of cardboard or an old piece of wood and wrap the lights around them.
Just because you decide to stick to similar lights doesn’t mean you have to use only one color. You could pair together white and blue or even multi-colored lights and white lights but try to come up with a pattern and stick with it. Just as you use patterns to add beauty to your summer garden, use a pattern when you are creating beauty in your Christmas lawn decorations. So, you may decide to decorate all the bushes and trees in blue lights and the trim around the house in white lights. Whatever you decide, make a plan before you actually head outside and get started. This will keep you from getting frustrated and just throwing the lights up without thinking.
Use What is Already There
There is such a thing as too many Christmas lawn decorations. We have all seen a neighbor who piles store bought Christmas decorations onto the lawn to the point where you can no longer enjoy the beauty of the decorations. This takes away from the joy of your Christmas lawn decorations

. Instead, use nature, such as placing lights on trees and shrubs and use what is already in place, such as lighting or garland around light posts orcolumns on the front porch. These objects are already main staples of the house and are things that guests will notice when they arrive at the house any other time of year. Enhancing the beauty of what is already there is a great way to make sure you add classic beauty to your Christmas lawn decorations.![]() |
