What is the best way to organise the furniture in my room?

My room is fairly large but it's a little difficult to know where to place my bed etc due to the lack of 'bare' walls (ie just wall and no window, wardrobe, door or balcony). How would you place everything if this was your room and your furniture?

This is a rough floor plan of my bedroom, along with the current furniture arrangement. That's a single bed, a little bedside table, a desk that would be great for a desktop computer (which I don't have), and that brown rectangle is a little cupboard thing I may end up putting my TV on again.
The red arrow indicates where the aerial port and double power outlet (thing what you plug the plugs into?) are.
The window is west-facing, the white rectangle on the left hand side of the picture is a small balcony whilst the brown boxes on the bottom of the picture show a built-in wardrobe [it's my first time drawing a floor plan like that].

So... any ideas? Any hints or tips somebody who has a vague understanding of feng shui principles would like to give?

We've just entered an Australian summer and my bedroom is on the second floor (one up from ground) so I'm unsure whether placing my bed under the window would make sleeping at night easier or harder...

Thanks for your input!

I don't know a thing about feng shui but I would put the bed either in the middle of the window wall or just sort of turn it around in the corner it's in so it's facing the balcony doors. I have a similar problem in my bedroom so my bed is in front of a window and personally I like it. I have heavy drapes to keep out a lot of the light and I love being able to open the window and have the fresh air right on me.

If you put the bed on in the middle of the window wall it will be a nice focal point when you walk in the room. Move the desk over to the wall by the door and if you put that little cupboard thing there by the wardrobe you'll be able to see the TV from bed easily.

If you don't like that tho, just turn it in the corner it's in - put the bedside table right up in the corner and the bed just next to it. That keeps the bed from being up tight into the corner but keeps it out of the middle of the room too. If you do this I would move the desk just a little closer to the wardrobe so you can use that door to the balcony and put the little cupboard thing in the corner in front of the other door so you can see the TV from bed.

I think it would look nice with any neutral colors. Is the comforter for your bed a brownish color?
With wood floors, you should always have a rug.
Get some valances for any windows. Some bed-in-a-bags come with valances.

If you live in a warm climate, you could set a tanning area up. Put a few towels, a lawn chair, maybe even a kiddie pool for splashing your feet in, with a stereo of course!
I would put a few chairs there, a cafe table is a great idea.
In the room, sconces sound like they would go nice with the wood feel.

Do you have a coordinating dresser/chest/bed frame/armoire set?

It would be cool to have natural things on the wall, like you could frame some leaves. That would be neat. In the fall go find some leaves, and put them in picture frames around the room, have at least several.

Blue goes nice with wood and brown also.

A floor lamp would be cool.

On the wall with the most windows , or the wall with the door, you could paint it a dark brown or a dark blue. The other walls parallel to that wall would be painted dark brown/dark blue also. The other walls would be a light brown/blue.

What to do with a huge room?

I live in a house with my grandparents and mum - they have a kitchen in the first floor and living room in second. Me and mum have 2 rooms upstairs, and we rent 2 rooms downstairs. But my grandparents want to stop renting one of them and move there to avoid stairs. So the free room will become mine. The current stairs will be removed.

All my life I had a room made by splitting the kitchen by a wooden wall. More an illusion of privacy than the real thing. It has barely 90 square feet. This new room is a bit smaller than others in the house, but still has 220 square feet. And it will have all four real walls and will be much more sound-proof. And a balcony. And I'll have my own bathroom, complete with a tub and everything.

The "problem" is I have absolutely no idea what to do with so much space. I'm only sure I want a double bed and wooden furniture. Any ideas? Are there any sites that let you make an model of a room for free? I'm sure I saw something like this, but can't remember.
The house is roomy. Even if I'd have my own family, people can shift the flats quite easily. There were more than 3 families living here some time ago. Besides, there could be a huge charming flat instead of the attic - it has so much unused architectural potential... My family lived for generations in this house. I don't want to change it - for those who think young people necessarily need to move out.

landscapeliving answers:

Congrats on getting your own space!

You can use your furniture and decorations to define rooms within the large room.
Any design mag will show you how to do this as open floor plans have become so popular.

Start by thinking about function, place your large pieces then fill around those. You might find it helpful to do a scale drawing on a grid, making scaled cut out for furniture and playing around with them instead of moving furniture over and over. Remember to keep areas that are intended to walk through about 3 feet wide.

How to convince hubby to sell home?

When we bought our brand new home in 2007 we had always planned on selling in the future. He is only 24 and I only 21 so we are both very proud of the house we created together. I also have two horses and having moved into town it has become a burden to board the horses away from where we live. Now i have been with horses since i was six and selling is not an option right now. We can afford them but it is a hassle having someone else look after my horses. In my opinion I am the only one who can look after them correctly and having to let someone else do it for me is very hard to swallow We were hoping to rent out the house here and move out to the country but unfortunatly there are very very few option in this area. I have found a place for sale while looking for a rental in the country, it is older then our new home but looks in a ok condition and is set up for two-three horses to boot. Plus the asking price is lower then what we paid for the new house and has many more features - two extra bedrooms, a garage (we don't have one) its landscaped (ours is only partial will be finished this summer) 2.78 acres of pasture and sheds and has a huge garden which is one thing i really want. Our mortgage would be lower as well with would be fantastic since we are expecting in may and we would like to continue saving for our big move North in a few years.

This sounds like a fantastic oppurtunity and right up our alley as it is right close to where we live now and his service truck would be able to be indoors . (we would have to inspect this whole place first to make sure it really is what we want). I have mentioned the place to hubby and he of course thought it to bad that we didn't wait to buy. Taking on an extra mortgage would be a little tough right now until his business is stable (he just started in october). Since the house is so new there isn't a lot that needs to be fixed and we already did some upgrades before moving in such as pulling carpet and putting down lamnet, some landscaping in the front ect. The pulled carpet would be included to replace the bedroom in the future.

My biggest concern is hurting hubbies feelings and making him feel like he hasn't provided enough. How can I approch this topic with him? I know he really wants to keep the place and would like to rent it out but i just don't see another mortgage in the future any time soon.

Any ideas?
Firstly i said i didn't want to take on two mortgages, I want to sell the one house we have and buy the other which would be cheaper for a mortgage and would save us more money.

Secondly i am in Canada and in the oil country where the economy is down but not horrible like the states. Prices are down but this area is booming do to oil and the liklyness of finding a place like this for $88 000 again is quite slim.
Rental prices in this area typically run from 500.00 for a room in the city to 1500.00-2000.00 for a house. That is much more then our current mortgage.

Well, I agree it sounds like a great deal and you will have room for your horses. The only problem is with the economy being so bad will you get full value for your current property? You may want to wait a couple of years.

Diary of a Snow Shoveller?

December 9: We woke to a beautiful blanket of crystal white snow
covering every inch of the landscape. What a fantastic sight! Can
there be a more lovely place in the Whole World? Moving here was the
best idea I've ever had. Shoveled for the first time in years and
felt like a boy again. I did both our driveway and the sidewalks.
This afternoon the snow plow came along and covered up the sidewalks
and closed in the driveway, so I got to shovel again. What a perfect
life.

December 12: The sun has melted all our lovely snow. Such a
disappointment. My neighbor tells me not to worry, we'll definitely
have a white Christmas. No snow on Christmas would be awful! Bob says
we'll have so much snow by the end of winter, that I'll never want to
see snow again. I don't think that's possible. Bob is such a nice
man. I'm glad he's our neighbor.

December 14: Snow, lovely snow! 8" last night. The temperature
dropped to -20. The cold makes everything sparkle so. The wind took
my breath away, but I warmed up by shoveling the driveway and
sidewalks. This is the life! The snowplow came back this afternoon
and buried everything again. I didn't realize I would have to do
quite this much shoveling, but I'll certainly get back in shape this
way. I wish I wouldn't huff and puff so.

December 15: 20 inches forecast. Sold my van and bought a 4x4 Blazer.
Bought snow tires for the wife's car and 2 extra shovels. Stocked the
freezer. The wife wants a wood stove in case the electricity goes
out. I think that's silly. We aren't in Alaska, after all.

December 16: Ice storm this morning. Fell on my ass on the ice in the
driveway putting down salt. Hurt like hell. The wife laughed for an
hour, which I think was very cruel.

December 17: Still way below freezing. Roads are too icy to go
anywhere. Electricity was off for 5 hours. I had to pile the blankets
on to stay warm. Nothing to do but stare at the wife and try not to
irritate her. Guess I should've bought a wood stove, but won't admit
it to her. God I hate it when she's right. I can't believe I'm
freezing to death in my own living room.

December 20: Electricity's back on, but had another 14" of the damn
stuff last night. More shoveling. Took all day. Goddamn snowplow came
by twice. Tried to find a neighbor kid to shovel, but they said
they're too busy playing hockey. I think they're lying. Called the
only hardware store around to see about buying a snow blower and
they're out. Might have another shipment in March. I think they're
lying. Bob says I have to shovel or the city will have it done and
bill me. I think he's lying.

December 22: Bob was right about a white Christmas because 13 more
inches of the white shit fell today, and it's so cold it probably
won't melt till August. Took me 45 minutes to get all dressed up to
go out to shovel and then I had to piss. By the time I got undressed,
pissed and dressed again. I was too tired to shovel. Tried to hire
Bob who has a plow on his truck for the rest of the winter; but he
says he's too busy. I think the asshole is lying.

December 23: Only 2" of snow today. And it warmed up to 0. The wife
wanted me to decorate the front of the house this morning. What is
she...nuts??? Why didn't she tell me to do that a month ago? She says
she did but I think she's damn well lying.

December 24: 6". Snow packed so hard by snowplow, l broke the shovel.
Thought I was having a heart attack. If I ever catch the son of a
bitch who drives that snowplow, I'll drag him through the snow by his
balls. I know he hides around the corner and waits for me to finish
shoveling and then he comes down the street at a 100 miles an hour
and throws snow all over where I've just been! Tonight the wife
wanted me to sing Christmas carols with her and open our presents,
but I was busy watching for the goddamn snowplow.

December 25: Merry Christmas. 20 more inches of the !=3D@x@!x!x1 slop
tonight. Snowed in. The idea of shoveling makes my blood boil. God I
hate the snow! Then the snowplow driver came by asking for a donation
and I hit him over the head with my shovel.

December 26: Still snowed in. Why the hell did I ever move here? It
was all HER idea. She's really getting on my nerves.

December 28: Warmed up to above -50. Still snowed in. THE BITCH is
driving me crazy!!!

December 29: 10 more inches. Bob says I have to shovel the roof or it
could cave in. That's the silliest thing I ever heard. How dumb does
he think I am?

December 30: Roof caved in. The snow plow driver is suing me for a
million dollars for the bump on his head. The wife went home to her
mother . 9" predicted.

December 31: Set fire to what's left of the house. No more shoveling.

January 8: I feel so good. I just love those little white pills they
keep giving me. Why am I tied to the bed?

The first snow of the season and the wife and I took our cocktails and sat for hours by the window watching the huge soft flakes drift down from heaven. It looked like a Grandma Moses Print. So romantic we felt like newlyweds again. I love snow!

December 9 - We woke to a beautiful blanket of crystal white snow covering every inch of the landscape. What a fantastic sight! Can there be a more lovely place in the Whole World? Moving here was the best idea I've ever had. Shoveled for the first time in years and felt like a boy again. I did both our driveway and the sidewalks. This afternoon the snowplow came along and covered up the sidewalks and closed in the driveway, so I got to shovel again. What a perfect life.

December 12 - The sun has melted all our lovely snow. Such a disappointment. My neighbor tells me not to worry, we'll definitely have a white Christmas. No snow on Christmas would be awful! Bob says we'll have so much snow by the end of winter, that I'll never want to see snow again. l don't think that's possible. Bob is such a nice man, I'm glad he's our neighbor.

December 14 - Snow lovely snow! 8" last night. The temperature dropped to -20. The cold makes everything sparkle so. The wind took my breath away, but I warmed up by shoveling the driveway and sidewalks. This is the life! The snowplow came back this afternoon and buried everything again. I didn't realize I would have to do quite this much shoveling, but I'll certainly get back in shape this way. I wish l wouldn't huff and puff so.

December 15 - 20 inches forecast. Sold my van and bought a 4x4 Blazer. Bought snow tires for the wife's car and 2 extra shovels. Stocked the freezer. The wife wants a wood stove in case the electricity goes out. I think that's silly. We aren't in Alaska, after all.

December 16 - Ice storm this morning. Fell on my ass on the ice in the driveway putting down salt. Hurt like hell. The wife laughed for an hour, Which I think was very cruel.

December 17 - Still way below freezing. Roads are too icy to go anywhere. Electricity was off for 5 hours. I had to pile the blankets on to stay warm. Nothing to do but stare at the wife and try not to irritate her. Guess I should've bought a wood stove, but won't admit it to her. God I hate it when she's right. I can't believe I'm freezing to death in my own living room.

December 20 - Electricity's back on, but had another 14" of the damn stuff last night. More shoveling. Took all day. Goddamn snowplow came by twice. Tried to find a neighbor kid to shovel, but they said they're too busy playing hockey. I think they're lying. Called the only hardware store around to see about buying a snow
blower and they're out. Might have another shipment in March. I think they're lying. Bob says I have to shovel or the city will have it done and bill me. I think he's lying.

December 22 - Bob was right about a white Christmas because 13 more inches of the white shit fell today, and it's so cold it probably won't melt till August. Took me 45 minutes to get all dressed up to go out to shovel and then I had to piss. By the time I got undressed, pissed and dressed again. I was too tired to shovel. Tried to hire Bob who has a plow on his truck for the rest of the winter; but he says he's too busy. I think the asshole is lying.

December 23 - Only 2" of snow today. And it warmed up to 0. The wife wanted me to decorate the front of the house this morning. What is she nuts!!! Why didn't she tell me to do that a month ago? She says she did but I think she's lying.

December 24 - 6". Snow packed so hard by snowplow, l broke the shovel. Thought I was having a heart attack. If I ever catch the son of a bitch who drives that snow plow I'll drag him through the snow by his balls and beat him to death with my broken shovel. I know he hides around the corner and waits for me to finish
shoveling and then he comes down the street at a 100 miles an hour and throws snow all over where I've just been! Tonight the wife wanted me to sing Christmas carols with her and open our presents, but I was too busy watching for the goddamn snowplow.

December 25 - Merry fucking Christmas! 20 more inches of the god damn slop tonight. Snowed in. The idea of shoveling makes my blood boil. God I hate the snow!
Then the snowplow driver came by asking for a donation and I hit him over the head with my shovel. The wife says I have a bad attitude. I think shes a fricking idiot. If I have to watch "It's A Wondeful Life" one mor time, I'm going to stuff her into the microwave.

December 26 - Still snowed in. Why the hell did I ever move here? It was all HER idea. She's really getting on my nerves.

December 27 - Temperature dropped to -30 and the pipes froze, plumber came after 14 hours of waiting for him, he only charged me 1,400 to replace all my pipes.

December 28 - Warmed up to above -20. Still snowed in. THE BITCH is driving me crazy!!!

December 29 - 10 more inches. Bob says I have to shovel the roof or it could cave in. That's the silliest thing I ever heard. How dumb does he think I am?

December 30 - Roof caved in. I beat up the snow plow driver he is now suing me for a million dollars not only the beating I gave him but also for trying to shove the broken snow shovel up his ass. The wife went home to her mother. 9" predicted.

December 31 - I set fire to what's left of the house. No more shoveling.

January 8 - Feel so good. I just love those little white pills they keep giving me. Why am I tied to the bed?

How do we remedy water issues with a ground level door on our house?

My husband and I live in a 1938 1 1/2 story farmhouse that has a back door that is level with the ground. The foundation is cut out about a foot and then the door rests there. When walking in there is a landing/entry way. Upon entering a person can go eight steps down to the basement or two steps up to the main floor. The reason this is configured this way is because if the door would be level with the main floor, you would hit your head on the ceiling because above you, is the landing of the stairs going up to the second floor. The problem with this is, is that more foundation sticks out above the ground than necessary and during the spring water runoff from the fields fills up our yard and threatens to roll right into our back door. Last year we had to sand bag around our whole house to keep water away so we built up the yard except in front of that back door. So this year we STILL have to sandbag in front of that door. This is going to get old really fast. If we could build up the yard all around the house, like we want to, this would not be a problem, but we can't because of that stupid door. Any suggestions other that totally reconfigureing our whole house? Any landscaping ideas? Could we just build up the yard and leave a little cut out entry way where we could step two steps down into the ground? If we did that, how could we eliminate water build up at that spot? Any constructive suggestions would be great.

You need to rip the foundation at that entry and install a gravity drain. Or install an awning or roof to cover the area and divert the runoff.

An awning can easily be made with large "L" brackets and canvas. Http://www.ehow.com/how_5946304_make-own-window-awnings.html

Build a retaining wall to keep the water back.

Plumbing cost question - can you give me an idea what a plumber would charge?

I need to run a residential water line from the meter at the street, about fifteen feet underground, then up to a height of about three feet above ground, where there needs to be a high-quality brass valve to accept a garden hose. Not sure if I need a pressure reduction valve also, but I will assume yes. This will be a watering station for a landscaping / garden area. Any rough idea about what a job like this might cost to have done?

landscapeliving answers:

This is a rough, worst case estimate. Work to be done by a professional plumber M-F, 8:00 - 4:00.

Trip charge & estimating, $100.00.

You will only need a psi reducing valve if pressure exceeds 80psi. They cost about $125.00 + $50.00 to install.

You will also need a backflow preventer. Add another $100.00 + $50.00 to install.

You need a stand pipe, add $50.00 + $50.00 to install.

You need 15ft of pipe run, not 15 feet deep I am assuming?

Figure labor to be $2.50/ft + $50.00 materials.

Are you connecting to an existing line, to an extra meter or a re-claim meter? Add $50.00 to connect to the meter.

You must also figure in the cost to pull a permit, inspection & call in locates before digging. Add $150.00 or more, depends on plumber.

The contractor will likely use an excavator, add $250.00 excavator charge.

Add all of the above, add 10% fudge factor in case I missed something + tax and that may give you a rough idea.

I'm stuck on logos, and logos are stuck on me.(yep, sleep deprived).... I NEED FRESH LOGO IDEAS pls?

I'm starting a new business; "Elevated Photography" - I use special camera/tripod equip that allows me to shoot from a height of 50' above ground, mainly for high-end real estate, commercial advertising. My Logo ideas are: camera on mountain peaks w/landscape view , camera on top of tall "pole" w/view. I just can't seem to convey the concept of this being "elevated photography" without looking cheezy.... Any ideas???? Thanks
My appologies; I should have been more specific w/my request.

I already have my business name and tag line, I'm just needing help w/image design concept.

How about what you just said?
"Elevated Photography"
sounds good to me
or you could add something to it
"50' Elevated Photography"

or if your looking for a buisness name you could call it
"Jan Jan Elevated Photography" and logo could be "Pictures for the Future" or "Elevated Pictures for Elevated Places"

How can I hide some ugly exterior insulation?

I inherited my parents' home, a lakefront cottage whose foundation is covered in external insulation...sheets of styrofoam-like stuff. In places this is exposed maybe two feet above the ground line. It is extremely ugly, and over the years it's begun to crumble in places. My idea is to mound up landscaping stone -- septic stone -- and hide the exposed insulation. Has anyone else had to deal with this? I don't have a lot of money for home repairs, and I suspect that this is one of the less expensive ways of hiding the foundation. Help me, home gurus!

Help! I have 2 Siberian Huskies and no fence. They keep escaping. Any suggestions?

The community I live in does not allow above ground fencing because it compromises the natural beauty of the landscape. So at least once a month I'm in a 4-hour chase for my dog. I've heard buried electronic fences don't work with this breed. Do electronic collars? Any other ideas?

Make sure they get plenty of exercise every single day, at least an hour. It's an active breed. You have two of them and they're a pack, so they're going "hunting" on their own because they don't get to go enough with you.

When they're outside, tie them with a strong chain secured to a pole, not one of those posts you screw into the ground.
