Fun and easy patio parties allow you to showcase your patio for friends and family to enjoy. A wonderful patio party that can be enjoyed by everyone attending does not have to require tons of preparation or tons of money to be a huge success. After all, you want to be able to enjoy the event rather than slaving away or using all your energy in preparations.

There are six key steps to creating fun and easy patio parties which will ensure success. Follow these steps as you plan you patio party and you'll find the party so much fun, you'll want to host another party very, very soon.

Invitations

You must let the people know exactly when and where you patio party is being held. If you have a computer, creating inexpensive invitations is very easy. If you do not have a computer, you can purchase ready-made invitations and simply fill in the information.

Include in your invitation the time the party is to begin and, to ensure that everyone leaves in time for you to be ready for the next day, establish a time for the party to end. For example, you might want to host an afternoon patio barbeque from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. or an evening party from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. By establishing an ending time, guests will know what to expect and will plan accordingly.

If you are inviting guests who are not familiar with where your home is located, it is a good idea to include directions and a contact phone number. It is very easy to use one of the mapping applications available online to print out a small map for inclusion in the invitation.

Seating:

You'll know the maximum number of guests to expect from the invitations extended. You'll want to plan to have seating available for as many guests as possible. Your patio table and chairs will provide some of this seating, but probably not nearly enough. You can bring out the dining room chairs, folding metal or plastic chairs, and collect lawn chairs from other parts of your lawn and garden to place around the patio and backyard area for seating. Stools, sturdy benches, and other seating arrangements can be used as well. If you host a large [party], you may wish to borrow or rent some chairs to supplement those you own. Fall parties can feature extra seating by placing bales of hay in the backyard and along the edges of the patio.

Decorations:

An inexpensive, beautiful decoration for evening patio parties that are fun and easy may be right in your holiday decorations. Small twinkling Christmas lights make great decorations when installed along the patio or deck railing, wrapped around support posts, or strung in large plants. Japanese lanterns also add to the atmosphere for evening parties on the patio.

Depending on the date of your party, you may have a party theme such as 4th of July, a birthday, or an anniversary. In these cases, choose simple decorations based on the theme. For 4th of July decorating you can tape red, white and blue streamers around the patio. For a birthday or anniversary, choose colors from the cake for streamers and balloons.

Use your potted plants for decorations. Simply move them to locations which are out of the traffic pattern yet can be seen by guests. Group smaller plants around larger specimens and you will create real impact. Groom your plants a few days before the party so you aren't rushing at the last minute.

Food:

Select food that is fun and easy to prepare for your . Everyone loves finger food such as chips and dip, vegetable trays, fruit trays, and put-it-together-yourself sandwich trays with cold cuts and cheeses. You can buy ready-made food from your nearby deli or grocer or prepare trays yourself to save money.

You can choose to grill beef, pork, chicken, or seafood if you wish, but be sure to really get organized in advance so you do not spend all your time grilling instead of enjoying the party. Ask a friend or two to help with the grilling chores.

Drinks:

There is no need to serve fancy drinks at a patio party. You can simply place a wide selection of popular soft drinks on ice in a large chest cooler and let everyone choose their own drink. Be sure to include diet drinks as well as those with sugar since some of your guests may be on restricted diets. You can also place large pitchers or dispensers of water, lemonade, and ice tea in easy-to-access locations beside a cooler of ice and a supply of paper cups so guests can serve themselves.

Clean-up:

Place trash receptacles in key spots so guests can dispose of their paper plates, cups, and other refuse themselves. Use paper tablecloths so you can simply bundle these up and dispose of them quickly at the end of your fun and easy patio party.

Gardening with your kids can be a wonderful experience for both you and the children...

Gardening with your kids can be a wonderful experience for both you and the children. This activity can also teach the kids a true appreciation of nature and develop a love of plants that will last throughout their lives.

Children want to be a part of everything and gardening is no exception. Most kids enjoy getting dirty and working with soil allows them this joy of childhood. Before allowing them to begin the gardening activities of the day, dress them in practical clothing. Choose long pants to protect tender knees. Select old clothing which you will not mind if grass and dirt stains do not come out of the clothing.

Safety Issues

Before beginning a gardening project with your kids, you should have a safety discussion. Many gardening tools are perfectly safe for [children] to use, but others can be dangerous. Identify which tools they should not touch as well as any power tools such as lawn mowers, electric hedge trimmers, or sharp utensils such as hoes that must be avoided and only operated by adults.

Young children tend to put everything in their mouths. It is important to explain to kids that they can not put any gardening material into their mouths and should not put fingers into their mouths while gardening. Fertilizer and enriched soil can be poison to kids. Be prepared to carefully supervise the gardening activities because children quickly forget these rules and can place a finger in their mouth without thinking!

Children’s Gardening Tools

Kids need gardening tools that are correctly sized for smaller hands. You can purchase kid-sized gardening tools with brightly colored handles at affordable prices so that your kids can have their very own gardening tools. If you purchase a set for each child, select different colored handles to prevent arguments over who owns which tools.

Select a garden trowel, a rake and small shovel or spade for each child. A small wheelbarrow can be shared by the kids since this is a more expensive tool. Each child can own a brightly colored bucket for carrying soil. A small watering pot is also a great addition to the child’s tool set. You may wish to purchase children’s gardening tools in handy garden totes. These sets contain all the hand tools needed for basic gardening.

You can purchase, or if you are handy with a sewing machine you can sew, a gardening apron for each child. Knee pads can be found in cute designs such as lady bugs if you plan to spend a lot of time kneeling in the garden plot.

Create a Kids’ Garden Area

You can choose to allow the kids to help with your gardening chores if you wish. But kids really get into gardening when they are given their very own garden plot. Each child could have a small plot for their own plants to care for. This provides the best sense of ownership and will keep the child interested in the project all season.

Choose seeds and plants for the kids’ gardening plots that are easy to grow and require little regular care. Children like to see something produced by their efforts, either flowers or food. They are usually not as interested in growing plants that only provide foliage. Marigolds, snap dragons, and four-o-clocks make great choices for flowering plants. Cherry tomatoes or bell pepper plants let the children grow something good to eat.

Kids in the Main Garden Area

If the kids want to help in the main garden area, you can allow them to help you weed, aerate the soil, water, and harvest. Before allowing them to weed, be sure they are able to identify the plants which should not be removed. Otherwise, you will probably end up with none of the desired plants remaining and lots of weeds.

Kids can also help rake leaves. They may not be very effective doing this job, but they can have a lot of fun with the task. Then, when the leaves are piled high, everyone can enjoy jumping into the pile.

The Family which Gardens Together Stays Together

Gardening with the kids can build strong family ties. Parents too often have too little time to spend with their children and teach them skills. Gardening, as task you are going to be involved in anyway, is a great time to involve the entire family. Children that are included in family activities which include exercise, such as gardening, tend to be less likely to become obese, even as adults. They develop better fine motor skills and hand to eye coordination. They are also less likely to later become involved in crime, alcohol, drugs, and even less likely to pick up bad habits such as smoking. They are more likely to learn not to bully others, share with others, and be kind to everyone. The kids involved in family-oriented activities are also less likely to drop out of school and are more likely to earn good grades.

So, take time to share your gardening with your kids. Everyone will benefit from the experience. Your gardening chores may take a bit longer, but the time investment is well worth while. Don’t miss out on this valuable experience. Begin gardening with your kids now!

Eco-friendly gardening helps maintain the environment and should be an important goal for everyone who gardens, regardless of whether your garden is large or small. Plants breathe in carbon dioxide and produce oxygen which is important to the renewal of the air we breathe. Plants provide food for wildlife and support healthy soil.

If you have never been involved in eco-friendly gardening , now is the time to begin. It is not difficult to convert your garden into an eco-friendly paradise which attracts wildlife and support the environment. If you are just starting a garden, start off on the ecologically sound basis provided by the tips below.

Garden with Native Plants: Too often gardeners want to grow plants that are not native to their locale and this introduces plants which can spread and drive out indigenous plants which are important to the balance of nature. Just because you elect to use native plants in your garden does not mean your garden must look wild or ragged. You can create some very attractive landscapes using nothing but plants that are native to your area. Another benefit of using local plants is that they cost less than imported varieties.

Stop Using Poisonous Sprays: Often people want to kill every insect that lives in their garden. The problem with this is that birds, butterflies, even animals can also be killed or experience problems as a result. There are many insects and creatures that are beneficial to the garden such as lady bugs, earthworms and [gardening techniques] which discourage insect infestations. Natural pesticides created from garlic or peppers can be used without harming nature to discourage infestations that do occur. Generally, however, healthy plants can withstand minor insect attacks, so focus on keeping the garden healthy rather than using detrimental sprays.

Take a Plant Survey: Contact your local plant society or county cooperative agent and have them walk through your properly. They can point out plants you should maintain as well as those which are not native to your area and should be removed. Non-native plants can drive out native plants and damage the environment. An example is the melaleuca tree which was introduced to Florida and today poses a real threat to the environment of the Everglades and other areas.

Protect Plants When Building or Clearing Garden Areas: Fence area off which need to be protected when you are building a structure such as a fence, stone wall, potting shed, or workshop. When clearing garden areas for planting, protect native plants. You can easily mark the plants to protect by using a color coded system of three colors of ribbon: one color for definitely remove, one color for save if possible, and one color for rare plants that must be saved. Then you can either transplant or work around the native plants.

Collect Water in a Rain Barrel: Place large plastic or metal drums along the eaves of building or in the yard to collect rain water for watering your potted plants and garden plants. The rain water contains no additives such as chlorine or fluoride and cost absolutely nothing, which reduces your watering bill. You can even transfer the water into seepage irrigation drums placed in strategic areas of the garden. Obtain the containers for collecting rain water by recycling materials that would otherwise end up in the landfill. Companies which empty drums of various types that held non-toxic, safe contents can be obtained easily and often at no cost whatsoever. Simply wash the barrels out with clear water to remove any residue or debris.

Create a Compost Pile: Compost retains moisture in your soil and reduces weed growth. It provides insulation for your garden and valuable nutrients. It also reduces the amount of garbage you send to the landfill by as much as 40%. All organic matter such as glass clippings, certain foods, and other natural material can be included in the compost pile. You can also compost in a container is you are worried about odor. You can fine detailed instruction for composting effectively online.

Create a Garden that Conserves Water: Water conservation is important because the water tables in many areas are becoming lower and lower. This results in sink holes and eventually may result in a worldwide water shortage. Design your garden so that it uses water efficiently. In the case of a sloped garden, place water-intensive plants near the front and those that require less water at the rear. Then water from the rear, allowing water to run downhill. Place a thick layer of compost or mulch over your garden to reduce evaporation of water. Only provide water in dry periods and then use as much collected rainwater as possible.

Use a Manual Lawnmower: Electric or gas lawnmowers use resources that not only cost you money in utility bills but are non-renewable for the most part. Manual lawnmowers are only a bit harder to use than powered mowers and the exercise is good for you. If you keep the lawn well maintained by mowing weekly during spring and summer, the grass will be easy to use. You can either bag the grass for inclusion in your compost or allow the grass to work its way into the soil and provide nutrients for your lawn.

Light Your Garden with Solar Lights: You may want to highlight special areas of your garden to show off specimen plants or you might just like to light your garden for evening enjoyment. Installing electric lights is a costly venture and continues to cost money each month in electricity, a non-renewable resource. You may even have to have a professional install your lights, which can be very expensive. Instead, you can purchase solar powered lighted which are beautiful and quite inexpensive. They generally cost the same or often much less than electric light and collect enough solar energy even on cloudy days to light the garden all evening. The selection of solar powered lights includes some very unique and beautiful designs and you will find a choice that is perfect for you eco-friendly garden.

Gardening fashion is turning toward retro plants. Most Baby Boomers recall from their childhood years going to their grandparents’ homes and seeing a gorgeous, bountiful flower garden of colorful blossoms.

Gardening fashion is turning toward retro plants. Most Baby Boomers recall from their childhood years going to their grandparents’ homes and seeing a gorgeous, bountiful flower garden of colorful blossoms. Sometimes, on a sunny summer day, Grandma probably gave you scissors and allowed you to cut a bouquet.

A time came that perfectly manicured shrubs were the rage in gardening fashion and annual [flower gardens] were much less popular. Just like pin-striped suits and bellbottoms, the plants of childhood were no longer in fashion. Just like clothing fashion has revisited styles of years gone by, gardening fashion is turning to the beauty and simplicity of retro plants.

Retro plants offer a comforting feel of nostalgia and most are very easy to grow. Let’s look at some of the great retro plants that are coming back into gardening fashion:

Sunflowers: Huge, Mammoth varieties provide huge blossoms a foot or more across. But if you want less height and drama, you can find sunflowers in smaller varieties and even color variations now. If you want to feed the wild birds in winter or roast sunflower seeds for your family, choose the large Mammoths and allow the seeds to mature. Sunflowers are a great choice for a child’s first gardening adventure because the large, colorful blossoms offer such satisfaction after the growing period. Nothing is more dramatic on a table than two or three large sunflower blossoms in a simple vase.

Zinnias: Zinnias offer a bounty of color and blossoms and are easy to grow, making them perfect for the busy modern family. The wide range of colors available allows the retro garden to have brightness and the blossoms make great cut flowers. There are even green blossoms available now; that variety is aptly named ‘Envy’. These, too, are great starter-flowers for young gardeners.

Marigolds: Want an easy to grow plant which will also help repel unwanted insects from the garden? Then marigolds are for you. You’ll find a range of colors and even plant sizes so there is a variety sure to fit into your retro garden perfectly.

Ferns: Ferns never really go out of style, but recently they have become all the rage for hanging baskets as well as ground plantings. For an elegant front porch look that is inviting, hang Boston ferns long the front of the porch. While these ferns are not the easiest to grow, a little care will go a long way in maintaining their beauty. On trick with the Boston fern is that all too often it is seriously root bound when purchased and will thrive when one crowded pot is divided into two. Asparagus fern can be lush and gorgeous, but use care when choosing where to plant this tuberous, spreading fern or it can get out of hand. Great for ground cover in front of taller plants or in baskets. Watch out when trimming because many of these ferns have small thorns hidden in their beautiful, deep green foliage.

Coleus: For a variety of color, coleus is a great choice. Colors range from light, pale green to deepest purple and many varieties are variegated. Easy to grow, this plant loves moisture and can even be grown in deep shade. In fact, it requires shade at least a good portion of the day to thrive.

You can create a welcoming entrance to your home for Thanksgiving quite easily by using the bounty of your lawn and garden for decorating. As the seasonal color scheme changes with the advent of fall, you will find that your landscape provides you with a wealth of ideas and color to include in decorating your doorsteps, front porch, walkway or driveway to welcome guests as they arrive for holiday get-togethers.

If you happen to have grapevines in your garden, you can harvest these and, while they are pliable, weave them into shapes for wreaths. Simply twist the vines into the desired shape; add a few twist ties or pieces of florist wire to secure the vines if needed. Circular or oval wreaths are the easiest shapes to create, but you can get as creative as you wish. While weaving grapevines, you might want to create one or more to use as a candle ring or to decorate the base of a Thanksgiving centerpiece. If you do not have grapevines, you can purchase pre-made wreaths easily.

Using Colorful Leaves

Shortly before the Thanksgiving holiday, harvest some colorful leaves from your landscape to decorate your wreaths. Use a selection of various shapes and colors and simply hot glue or wire them into position on your grapevine wreath. Add a colorful bow, either purchased or one you tie yourself, to the wreath and hang on the front door or porch railing.

If you saved dried straw flowers from summertime gardening, you can add these to your wreath for another beautiful addition. These can also be used to create garlands along a porch railing, enhance greenery displays, and to include in your indoor Thanksgiving decorating.

Potted chrysanthemums in appropriately-sized pots can be used to place on each side of the front door or along the driveway or walkway. These beautiful flowering plants are available in an array of colors so choose some which compliment your Thanksgiving decorating color palette. Yellow, orange, and even maroon bring fall's colors into your welcoming entranceway.

Boughs of holly with its red berries can be draped along the porch or stair railing. You could also add boughs along window sills. Another great choice for draping greenery along the front walkway is asparagus fern. This hardy greenery holds up very well when cut for several days, making it perfect for the entire Thanksgiving holiday.

Pumpkins and Gourds

Pumpkins and gourds can be harvested and placed on your door steps, beside your front door, along the walkway, or as a [decoration] at the base of an outdoor post lamp. They also look wonderful when used as a border feature along your eave garden. Simply select ones that have appealing shapes and place them in the design desired. Add some colorful leaves or greenery to complete the look.

Add some of Thanksgiving's bounty outdoors for the birds to enjoy. Simply place a birdfeeder and suet racks in good locations so your outdoor friends can come to visit and delight your holiday guests.

You do not have to spend fortunate purchasing ready-made decorations for Thanksgiving. It is more fun to make them from the items grown in your own garden and landscape. This can become a family tradition and bring everyone closer together as they enjoy the bounty of nature and realize that Thanksgiving is all about being thankful to have such beauty to enjoy.

Do you have a swimming pool in your backyard and want to create the perfect landscape to surround the pool? It can be quite easy to incorporate simple, easy landscaping into the backyard that works to make the backyard a pleasant, livable space for warm weather months.

Of course, you want to create a landscape that will include lush plants but yet you do not want the landscape to add any additional maintenance burden to caring for the pool. Avoid adding any deciduous plants so that leaves will not be shed and blown by the wind into the water of your pool, causing you to have to fish the leaves out with a pool net. You’ll also want to avoid the use of evergreens such as pines that lose needles which can end up clogging filters and adding extra work to pool care. Also, avoid planting flowering plants which can lose their blossoms, resulting in flowers floating in the [pool]. You’ll also want to cover the ground with mulch, gravel, or other ground cover to prevent strong winds from blowing soil into the pool and overworking your swimming pool filter system.

Plants Provide Privacy

One aspect of pool landscaping you will certainly want to incorporate into the landscape are plants that provide privacy. If you have a privacy fence, it can be made more attractive by planting climbing vines such as honeysuckle or Mandeville. If you do not have a privacy fence and do not wish to build a fence in the backyard, you can create a sense of privacy by planting tall, leafy plants along the sides of the backyard or by placing large, lush potted plants along the edges of the concrete surrounding the pool. While plants may not provide a complete wall of vegetation, large, leafy plants can provide enough privacy to make the swimming pool a more comfortable place to sun and swim. Some good choices for potted plants include the schefflera, palm trees of various species, crotons, and evergreens which do not shed needles such as cedar. These potted plants can be moved indoors or into a protected area for the hard freezes of winter if you live in a cold climate.

To add a sense of whimsy to the backyard swimming pool area, you can add lighting effects to your privacy plants. Outdoor Christmas lights, all in white, are popular for twining among the leaves and trunks to create a feeling of the night’s stars brought down to earth. You can add spotlights to highlight your specimen plants as well and create a sense of warmth as well as showing off your plants. You can choose small spotlights that are operated by solar power to help the environment as well as your electric bill. Both outdoor Christmas lights and solar powered feature lighting are very affordable ways of adding to the backyard swimming pool.

You can add short ornamental grasses planted along the edges of the concrete surrounding the swimming pool, leaving an opening in the plants where the pathway or walk way to the pool meets the pool surround. Variegated Japanese sedge is great for this purpose, or you might prefer asparagus fern for hardiness and ease of care.

Add Small Potted Specimens

If you have a patio or deck near the swimming pool, you can add small potted specimen plants to these areas. Comfortable, yet sturdy, outdoor furniture is a must for sitting by the pool. Add tiki torches or solar powered lighting to the patio or deck to give your seating area a homey feel for nighttime entertaining outdoors during summer months.

It only requires a small investment and a little time to make your backyard pool become a focal spot of your landscape. You’ll enjoy the results of your labors both day and night during warm months.

During the spring, summer and fall months, you may wish to do the majority of your entertaining outdoors. You’ll want to have an attractive yard that will provide a welcome spot for your guests to enjoy for barbeques, picnics, or just for visiting together and enjoying the company of friends and family members during both daytime and evening get togethers.

Incorporate lush plants into your landscape to add a sense of privacy as well as to bring the tropics into your yard. Palm trees can be placed in large pots on plant dollies with wheels along the perimeter of the yard, or in temperate climates these specimen plants can be planted in the ground. Schefflera trees are another good alternative for pots or in-ground plantings, depending on your locale. Add a special touch for entertaining by twirling tiny white Christmas lights onto the trunk of the palms as well as along the fronds. Add them to the trunk and limbs of other plants to add mood lighting for entertaining. Another yard idea for [entertaining] as well as everyday living is to add solar powered lights underneath your best specimen plants to highlight them. The warmth and welcoming, homey feel that lighting adds to the yard will make you and your guests feel cozy and comfortable.

Swimming Pool Fun

If you have a swimming pool, pond, or other water feature in your yard, an idea you might love for entertaining is to add floating candles to the water. This adds elegance and makes the water feature become an entertaining asset rather than simply a body of water. Floating candles can be found at your home or pool supply store. These candles can also be ordered from online sources. A popular design for floating candles is the white water lily design, but other shapes and colors are readily available.

Outdoor furniture that is already on your patio can take care of most of the seating for a small party, but if you are hosting a larger event, you’ll probably want to drag the dining room chairs and other portable seating outdoors. You might also purchase some inexpensive molded plastic stackable chairs that you can use again and again for entertaining. These plastic chairs are surprisingly comfortable and cost only a few dollars each at your local discount store.

Back Yard Entertaining

To create a perfect table for entertaining in your back yard, try this idea: purchase an inexpensive hollow wooden door from your building supply store. Ask for a flawed door which you can buy at a very low price. Use two end tables or stacked plastic crates to create pillars to hold each end of the door. Then cover the door with a large sheet or table cloth in any color that blends with your overall color scheme. You’ll have a great place to serve food and drinks for only a few dollars. After the party, you can store the door in your garage or storage room until you need it again. Use a grouping of pillar candles in various heights placed on a platter to make a great centerpiece.

Luminaries also add a welcoming feel to backyard entertaining. To create luminaries, simply gather together some white or brown paper bags in a small size. Look for “lunch bags” in your local superstore or grocery store. Using clean sand, place about two to three inches of sand in each bag. Place a tea light or small candle in the sand. Place the luminaries along walkways, around the swimming pool, and use them to direct guests to your backyard from the driveway. When it is time for guests to arrive, simply light the candle for a very dramatic effect that is very affordable.

Springtime rejuvenates the world around us with little effort on our part, but these spring landscaping tips may put you a little ahead of the game.

Lawns

Have you ever noticed how well weeds grow? That’s because some of them can produce up to a million seeds! Annual weeds grow, produce seed and then die within a year. If they are properly removed before they seed, this problem can be radically prevented. Pull weeds by hand, securing both the crown and the roots. If your lawn is healthy, it will hold back weed growth. Make sure it is watered, fertilized, aerated and mowed properly.

Trees and Shrubs

Prune branches that were damaged during winter.

Fertilize ornamental trees and shrubs with a granular fertilizer that is slow-acting.

Look closely for signs of insect damage on needled and broad-leafed evergreens.

Add new mulch to prevent weed growth and to retain moisture.

Fertilize roses and add new mulch.

Plant new trees, shrubs and bare-root roses, or transplant existing ones to another area.

Lost To the Frost

It is important to check the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) data for the average dates of the last spring frost for your area of the country. Many an annual has been lost to the last frost. When nighttime temperatures are above freezing, remove mulch from existing beds to allow the sun to warm up the soil.

Existing Perennials

Divide overgrown masses of summer or fall blooming perennials. Do the same for spring bulbs once they have finished flowering.

Examine plants for any aphids or mites. A strong spray from the water hose will knock them off.

Annuals, Perennials and New Flower Beds

Before deciding which flowers and plants will go into the flower bed, first determine the pH of the soil. Is it high in acid (1.0) or is it alkaline? (14.0) Or is it neutral? (7.0) It is important to choose plants that will thrive not die in their new environment. Test kits are available at any garden center, and knowing the chemical balance of your soil will give you an edge when choosing flowering plants.

It is also important to check the USDA recommendations on what plants will be hardy in your area and which ones will not. The USDA produces a map that gives these statistics to help you choose what will grow and what will not in your particular area of the country.

Choose plants that will bloom in succession, not all at once. This will produce a bed that can bloom from spring into late summer and even early fall. Plant smaller flowering plants in front; place medium one in the middle and plant the tallest along the rear. Invest in a soaker hose that can be placed along the contours of the bed. Mulch well to prevent weeds from ever seeing the sunlight.

Probably the best spring landscaping tip is to look around at your existing landscape. What do you want to keep and nourish? What could be added to increase the beauty and vitality of your little piece of the world? Remember, “beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” Study your site and study your plant desires and the beauty of it all will unfold before your very eyes.
